8 business people to watch in 2016

Now operated as a unit of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp., the World Trade Center helps local businesses sell abroad and foreign companies and investors do business in San Diego.

Clarke, who took the helm three months ago, said three focus areas in 2016 will help San Diego companies expand exports, facilitate foreign companies making direct investments here, and broaden San Diego’s global image.

Clarke, who speaks Mandarin, Spanish and Setswana (a language spoken in South Africa), earned a Ph.D. in international relations at Oxford University where she founded the Oxford University China Africa Initiative. This year she plans a second round of MetroConnect grants to help companies expand international trade. Trade missions to Britain, Japan and New Zealand are planned in the first few months of the year, and a 60-member Latin American delegation is coming to San Diego in April.
