San Diego is home to one of the most sophisticated healthcare industries in the country. Academic medical centers and clinically-focused hospitals provide high-quality primary care and specialties  that have achieved national stature. San Diego hospitals hold some of the highest ratings by national publications, such as U.S. News and World Report, for both overall care and unique specialties. The industry is one of the fastest growing and one of the largest employers in the region. San Diego is considered a leader in health innovation due in part to its “Live Well, San Diego” initiative, a 10-year plan to build a healthy, safe and thriving community.

Industry Highlights & Contributions

  • San Diego is home to 25 hospitals and more than 26,000 unique healthcare and social assistance establishments that employ more than 140,000 people. San Diego healthcare companies provide more than $6.9 billion in wages annually.
  • Every additional $50 million in health care services spending, such as from increased medical tourism or increased insurance coverage, generates an additional 600 jobs in the San Diego economy.
  • From 2009 through 2013, almost 1 million square feet of additional medical office and 1.2 million square feet of hospital space were constructed in San Diego annually.
  • Over the past five years more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs were supported by capital investments made by the region’s healthcare services providers.


Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health plans, serving more than 9 million members, with headquarters in Oakland, Calif. In San Diego it comprises approximately 20 clinics and one hospital.

Palomar Health

Palomar Health, based in San Diego’s north county area, includes the new state-of-the-art Palomar Medical Center opening in Escondido in August 2012. It also includes Pomerado Hospital in Poway. Palomar Health is a California Hospital District covering an 850-square mile area. It is the largest hospital district in California.

Rady Children’s Hospital

Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego is the region’s pediatric medical center serving San Diego, Imperial, and southern Riverside counties. Rady is the largest children’s hospital in California, based on admissions, and the sixth largest children’s hospital in the United States.

Scripps Health

Scripps offers services at facilities throughout San Diego County, including five hospital campuses, 11 Scripps Clinic locations, 12 Scripps Coastal Medical Center sites and other affiliated sites. 

Sharp Healthcare

Sharp HealthCare offers services throughout the city of San Diego and its surrounding communities with four acute care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, five San Diego urgent care centers and many other facilities and services. Sharp hospitals are part of Sharp HealthCare, which has been recognized for quality excellence with the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Tri-City Medical Center

Tri-City Medical Center serves San Diego County's coastal communities of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista, as well as the surrounding region. Tri-City is administered by the Tri-City Healthcare District, a California Hospital District.

UC San Diego Health System

UC San Diego Health System is San Diego’s only academic health system and is composed of UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, and UC San Diego Thornton Hospital, Moores Cancer Center, Shiley Eye Center, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, as well as other primary and specialty practices of UC San Diego Medical Group located throughout Southern California.
