Case Study
Cleantech San Diego seeks to quantify industry impact, inform City Climate Action Report
ServiceIntelligence/Research
Cleantech San Diego, a member-based trade organization, commissioned an economic impact assessment to both inform its own work as it develops relationships within the industry and with public and private partners, and to provide job data for the City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan Annual Report 2020.
Company
Challenge
The Cleantech industry cluster is constantly evolving and not well defined. As an industry trade group, Cleantech San Diego needs consistent metrics that accurately measure the size, scope, and economic impact of the cluster over time. Cleantech San Diego also provides climate action related job trends to the City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan Annual Report 2020
EDC Solution and Support Provided
By request of Cleantech San Diego, EDC’s Research Bureau conducted an economic impact assessment of the region’s Cleantech cluster for 2020, using updated industry classifications to provide a consistent analysis of the cluster’s impact over time. This assessment measures the industry cluster’s direct employment, as well as its total economic contribution to the region including indirect and induced impacts. The assessment also measures federal, state, and local tax impacts. Furthermore, EDC assessed the economic impact for solar installers, an important constituent of Cleantech San Diego.
Value Derived
Cleantech San Diego’s 2020 annual report cited the figures provided by EDC to demonstrate the breadth and depth of the industry cluster in the San Diego region. The analysis was also referenced in the City of San Diego’s 2020 Climate Action Plan Monitoring Report.
“Presenting the significant economic impact the Cleantech cluster has on the San Diego region is one of the most powerful messages we share as an organization. These economic impact numbers are a cornerstone of our annual report and press materials and are consistently referenced in the dozens of presentations we make at meetings and conferences around the globe each year”
—Jason Anderson, President & CEO, Cleantech San Diego
