San Diego Regional EDC and our Foundation offer a competitive internship program that provides students with valuable experience in economic development, marketing and communications, research, and more. An independently funded non-profit organization, EDC promotes the San Diego business community, facilitates business expansion in a variety of industries, and supports the diverse talent pool that drives their success, and is dedicated to rebuilding a post-pandemic economy that is more inclusive and resilient than before so prosperity reaches more people.

EDC’s Economic Development Intern will support the Economic Development team in executing programs, economic research projects, virtual and in-person events/meetings, and support the team in economic data collection to help highlight San Diego’s economic strengths. This position reports to the Coordinator, Economic Development.
This is a part-time internship position, up to 15 hours per week.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
Project and Program Support – Support the implementation of plans, strategies and activities that support the growth of San Diego’s economy.
- Support the economic development team on projects, programs, meetings, and events.
- Provide administrative support for company project work.
- Maintain internal economic development databases and business resources.
Research – Responsible for collecting and analyzing data on San Diego’s economy.
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and writing of in-depth industry-specific reports.
Marketing/Communications – Support the economic development programs and projects with communication pieces to inform companies, investors, board members and partners.
- Track relevant news related to business growth in San Diego.
Administration – Support the staff at EDC with office management tasks.
- Assist the coordinator staff with inquiry and request responses.
- Assist with data and information maintenance.
Key Qualifications
- Recent grad or current student studying economics, business, political science, international relations, urban planning, statistics/data analytics, finance, journalism, marketing, communications, and/or related fields.
- Self-directed and motivated team player with ability to manage multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

EDC’s Research Intern will support the Research team in executing programs, economic research projects, virtual events/meetings, and support the team in content creation (social, blog, newsletter, presentation, web) to help highlight San Diego’s economic strengths. This position reports to the Manager, Research.
This is a part-time internship position, up to 15 hours per week. Access to a computer with basic functions, and 15 hours per week is required.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
Research – Responsible for collecting and analyzing data on San Diego’s economy.
- Collect and analyze publicly available data in order to understand the regional economy and key economic drivers.
- Research and analyze key industries within the region’s economy.
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and writing of in-depth industry-specific reports.
- Produce written analysis under guidance from the Research team for publication on EDC’s website.
Project Management – Work with research team and outside partners to ensure quarterly goals are met.
- Produce impact analysis reports for blogs, industry analyses, and ad-hoc projects as needed.
- Assist other EDC staff members on special projects as required.
- Maintaining data for organization and cross-team collateral.
- Update, maintain, and analyze procurement metrics for local institutions.
Office Administration – Support the staff at EDC with administrative tasks.
- Assist with data management. Responsibilities include preparing datasets in addition to maintenance and
- storage.
- Support documentation of methodology and analysis.
- Assist research team as needed.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
Must-haves
- Currently enrolled in a university, community college, or other training program, recent graduate, or other relevant experience (non-traditional backgrounds welcome) in San Diego.
- Interested in economics, public policy, urban studies, or related field as a career.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-directed critical thinker and motivated team player with ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
- Strong macro-economic background, with familiarity with regional macro-economic data sources.
- Strong quantitative abilities.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Helpful to have
- Some experience extracting and analyzing public data; sources include but are not limited to U.S. Census Data, California ED Labor Market Info, Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and Bureau of Economic Analysis data.
- Some experience with database management and statistical software packages such as – R, Matlab, Stata, eViews, SqlServer, or Python.

EDC’s Marketing Intern will support the Marketing and Communications team with content creation (social, blog, newsletter, presentation, web) to highlight San Diego’s economic competitiveness and efforts toward an inclusive economic recovery. This position reports to the Coordinator, Marketing.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
Marketing/Communications – Support EDC and managed brands (San Diego: Life. Changing. and World Trade Center San Diego) in its work to inform and interest key stakeholders – companies, investors, board members, and partners.
- Manage the collection of success stories and news relevant to projects to compose regular newsletters and reports.
- Manage the collection of relevant San Diego rankings and accolades.
- Assist with regular newsletter and blog creation for EDC and programmatic brands.
- Assist with social media account management by creating and publishing original material.
- Assist with the upkeep of materials used to promote San Diego (website, brochures, data sheets, etc.).
- Assist with event preparation as needed (mostly or entirely virtual events anticipated).
- Assist with website maintenance.
- Assist with graphic design, video editing, and other media curation.
Office Administration – Support the staff at EDC with administrative tasks.
- Assist the coordinator staff with inquiry and request responses.
- Assist with data and information maintenance.

World Trade Center San Diego (WTCSD) is an affiliate of San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC). The EDC/WTCSD summer internship program is a four-month professional development opportunity, serving college-aged students in the final years of their undergraduate education.
The program has a track record of preparing interns for a successful entry into the workforce. Past EDC/WTCSD interns have gone on to launch successful careers in the San Diego region, at companies such as General Atomics, Cubic Corporation, EY, Northrop Grumman, Viasat, WTCSD, and more.
Intern Projects and Skill Building Experiences
- Company Projects – Gain practical experience supporting local small-and-medium-sized enterprises with their global efforts. Interns will have the opportunity to interface with exporting professionals to open new international markets, through WTCSD’s MetroConnect program and Export Small Business Development Center.
- Research – Collect and analyze data on San Diego’s economy, produce written analysis, assist with data management, prepare, maintain, and store data sets, and research and analyze key industries within the region’s economy. Critical research on WTCSD’s next trade mission destination – Korea.
- Economic Development – Data compilation and content creation highlighting San Diego’s economic strengths. Conduct economic and industry information for clients, staff, and partners. Maintain internal economic development databases and business resources. Provide logistical support for in-person or virtual events and meetings.
- Event Management – Event coordination and stakeholder management for WTCSD’s biggest external event of the year – the MetroConnect Grand Prize PitchFest. Additional coordination of business roundtables with corporate stakeholders and public partners (i.e., Port of San Diego, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, City of San Diego, etc.).
- Marketing/Investor Relations – Draft and edit blog posts, draft website copy, and social media content. Assist with email marketing efforts, and list segmentation learning to optimize content to reach wider audiences.
Interns will meet three times per week (hybrid in-person & virtual) with supervisors to review workflow, and to receive feedback and coaching. EDC covers IT costs, such as increased broadband/internet fees necessary for connectivity in a remote work environment.
