San Diego Regional EDC and our Foundation offer a competitive internship program that provides students with valuable experience in economic development, marketing and communications, research, and more. The Economic Development & Research team is seeking an intern to support on ongoing projects with economic data collection and database management. An intern can expect to work 10-15 hours per week, at least half the time on site, and to serve in the role until June 30, 2025. EDC offers a flexible schedule including remote work on Mondays and Fridays, and in-office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The pay is $22/hour. This position reports to the Coordinator, Economic Development and Manager, Research.

What you’ll do on a day-to-day basis:

  • Data collection and analysis: Collect publicly available data related to employment, housing, commercial real estate, and venture capital for incorporation into EDC’s Quarterly Economic Snapshot. Produce written analysis to understand the regional economy and key economic drivers. Assist research team on contracted projects as required.
  • Database management and data requests: Update and maintain EDC’s Master Presentation for the organization by collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, California Employment Development Department, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and more. Field internal and external stakeholder data requests as inquiries occur.
  • Project and Program support: Support the Economic Development team on projects, programs, meetings, and events
  • Office Administration: Support the staff at EDC with day-to-day department operations.
  • Other duties as assigned

What we look for in a candidate:

  • Recent grad or current student studying economics, business, political science, international relations, urban planning, statistics/data analytics, finance, and/or related fields
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Some familiarity with database management and statistical software packages (R, Matlab, Stata, or Python)
  • Some experience with extracting and analyzing data from public sources; sources include but are not limited to U.S. Census Bureau, California Employment Development Department, and Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
